New Book!—A Beautiful Time Story With Fun Alliteration
When Little Song is invited to a midnight ball at noon, she leaves right away, hoping to get to the party on time.
And, while the party seems to be the true purpose of her journey, we soon understand it is secondary.
Enjoying the gorgeous landscape, entering into new friendships, encountering the generous spirit of strangers—this becomes the center of Little Song’s day.
As Little Song keeps journeying, day turns to afternoon, which turns to evening, which eventually turns to night. We see time passing on a changing pocket watch. We hear time passing in the narrative. And we notice that as the light changes, the animals our main character meets change. (Friendly frog in the afternoon versus moonlit moth at night, for instance. And, did you catch that alliterative fun—a secret introduction to poetic devices?)
This is the second illustrated title from Sara Barkat (the first being for older readers: The Yellow Wall-Paper: A Graphic Novel).
Also rendered in pen-and-ink—but black instead of sepia—The Midnight Ball is whimsical and tender in style. We feel ourselves melting into the landscape with Little Song, whether in the fields, by the stream, or in the forests. All the while, a pocket watch quietly counts the hours and sometimes the minutes, providing a gentle adventure in time.
Of course The Midnight Ball can be used to learn to read, or to learn to tell time, but first and most importantly it is a lovely friendship story that invites us in (and along).

Bethany, that’s lovely to hear. I hope they enjoy the book. I know Sara would be happy that the book has become a gift (after all, she first created it as a gift for a special little girl 🙂 ).
