Our new monthly theme is To Poets. And it is poets, especially when composing lyric poetry, who called upon the inspirational muse Euterpe. Musicians also called upon her to inspire.
Euterpe was, by some accounts, the daughter of the goddess of Memory and the ever-fathering Zeus. Other accounts make Euterpe one of the water nymphs who was born because the winged horse Pegasus stamped its foot near the springs of Helicon. I rather like the latter explanation, because it lends a musical sense (the babbling brook) to her birth. Born of music, it would make sense she’d create the double flute and play it to bring delight. (That said, some mythographers credit Marsyas or Athena with the double flute’s invention.)

Euterpe Goddess of Lyric Poetry and Music
Since her name means “giver of delight,” it would be only natural for her to live into that, both by playing her flute and by inspiring poets and musicians to create delightful works.
Poetry Prompt
Explore inspiration via Euterpe. If you like, start by listening to some flute music or a babbling brook. Then write a poem that moves with the rhythm of the sound, or is simply inspired by the mood that the sound creates in you. You could also write a poem about your own name and what it would mean to live into that as a person moving in the context of your choice (family, friendship, work, travel, whatever!).
