Poetry Prompt: Sherlock Holmes Day!

Sherlock Holmes Day

Today is Sherlock Holmes Day. What better time to write a poem to the sleuth? Or about him. Or about his associate Watson?

If you’re not in the mood to write a poem, then it might be a great day to reread one of your favorite Sherlock Holmes stories. (Do tell us in the comments if you have a favorite Holmes story—and why it’s your fave!)

Try It: Sherlock Poetry

Write a poem to or about Sherlock Holmes. Or, to or about Watson. Or write a poem to Arthur Conan Doyle. Or write a poem about solving a mystery. It needn’t be elementary, dear Poet. Try a villanelle if you want to add a little magic to your mystery! Or try a pantoum, if you want to haunt your harrowing detective work.

    Here is my Addition

In shadows deep, where mysteries reside,
A figure emerges, astute and wide.
Sherlock Holmes, the master of deduction,
A mind unparalleled in its seduction.

On Baker Street, his haven and domain,
He delves into cases, each riddle’s bane.
With magnifying glass and pipe in hand,
He unravels secrets in this treacherous land.

His piercing gaze, like an eagle’s sight,
    Penetrates illusions, reveals what’s right.
A symphony of logic dances in his brain,
Unraveling clues, leaving no detail in vain.

A master detective, with intellect ablaze,
His methods complex, a puzzler’s maze.
He dons the deerstalker, his trademark guise,
As he ventures forth, where truth never lies.

Beside him stands Watson, loyal and true,
A steadfast companion, through and through.
A chronicler of tales, his pen brings to life,
The adventures shared in their grand strife.

Together they tread through London’s foggy mist,
In search of justice, no matter the twist.
Holmes, the enigma, with his mind so keen,
And Watson, the anchor, a trusted screen.

From “A Study in Scarlet” to “The Final Problem,”
The tales unfold, each one a literary emblem.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the master we revere,
Created legends that resonate, year after year.

So on this Sherlock Holmes Day, let us pay homage,
To the detective who defies the limits of knowledge.
And to Watson, his partner, steadfast and strong,
Their legacy echoes, through prose and in song.

For Holmes, the quintessential sleuth we adore,
    And Watson, his companion, forevermore.
In words and verse, their brilliance we extol,
Sherlock Holmes and Watson, heroes of the soul.
