Postcards from Burrow & Meadow · No. 3 Listening

By Bethany Rohde 7 Comments

Greetings From Burrow & Meadow postcard

Burrow & Meadow postcard

Hello again,

These days can be rough. I hope you’re finding some pockets of peace to pause in. Do feel free to write back and tell me about them.

On Saturday, I got to sleep in and enjoy the leisure of waking up gradually. The first sounds I noticed were a muted pat, pit-pat, in the distance. My mind went to the light footfalls of my daughter making her way out of her bedroom and into our shared hall.

I blinked open my eyes and waited, but the soft rhythm did not get closer to or farther from my door. Pat, pit-pat, pat …

What gentleness is this?

As I slowly started to acclimate, I noticed the hushed quality of light filtering through my cream sheers.

Raindrops

I wonder if someday, when my daughter no longer sleeps down the hall, the rain might offer me this memory as a way to keep her close.

Warmly,
Bethany

If she could spend her coffee break anywhere in the world, it would be in the imagined place she used to draw as a kid (and still does). She'd lean back against the smooth trunk of a shade tree surrounded by undulating, grassy hills and watch the sway and flow of the blades.

    “What gentleness is this?”

Bethany, I’ve been up for a while—after rising in haste. Your postcard offers a do-over. The thoughtful spacing and pacing of your words ushers me back into that signature hush of morning-drift—that almost alchemical state where memory touches imagination.

    Thank you.

    Rain on the window
    wakes me into the peace
of the ghost of my child’s fur steps.

But still I think it’s right for your child take care
