Heart Talk

The words of my mouth
reading a story aloud
to the child on my lap
but though I read
every word perfectly
I do not know
the storyline,
my mind on less
important thoughts
though the child
is on my lap.

The words of my mouth
asking “How are you?”
to the friend on the phone
but though she pours
out the real answer
I do not hear,
my mind on less
important thoughts
though the friend
is on the phone.

The words of my mouth
chatting with the neighbors
on the driveway telling
of aches in the hips
and strawberries that the deer ate
but though I nod
at their daily lives
I do not hear,
my mind on less
important thoughts
though the neighbors
are on the driveway.

The words of my mouth
are not the same
as the words of my heart.

Father, change me…

  1. Reading this again, I am again moved. We all find ourselves in this same place that Monica describes, our words not what our hearts mean and want to say. How to be present in the swirl of all around us, the swirl we make for ourselves, that leaves us in a place we’re not wanting or meant to be. Listen to the heart to be where the heart’s most needed.

    Lovely, Monica.

  2. L.L. Barkat says:

I particularly like the last 3-line stanza. It’s a poem in itself.

Sponsor Poetry (& Happiness)

Every day at Tweetspeak we work hard to bring happiness and personal growth to our audience. Sure, it costs. We could talk about that in terms of what it takes to make a house downpayment, for instance (and not in South Dakota either, you betcha).

Or we could just say this: we do it happily. If you want to be part of that happiness in a small way, you could "Subscribe" for a year. Well, and that would make us happy too. Yep.

We aren't offering anything gimmicky in return. Just a chance to make us smile and keep us mortgage-free. And either way, Tweetspeak will be here for you every day.

We'd love to tweet or Facebook our thanks to you if you sponsor. (And that's no gimmick.) Just tell us not to if you prefer to stay secret.
